Auction Car
Inspection Sydney

Buying from Lloyds Auctions, Pickles, Manheim, or any online car auction? An inspection before you bid is the only way to know what you're actually buying โ€” auctions sell with no warranty and no returns.

Book Auction Inspection โ†’ Why Inspect at Auction?

Auctions Are "As Is" โ€” There Are No Refunds

When you win a car at auction, you own it โ€” regardless of what problems are discovered afterward. There is no cooling-off period, no warranty, and no right of return. The hammer falls and that's it.

Auction houses provide condition reports and photos, but these are not the same as an independent mechanical inspection. Condition reports tell you about visible damage โ€” they don't tell you about a transmission about to fail, fault codes stored in the ECU, or a timing chain stretched to its limit.

Our mechanics inspect auction vehicles before the auction closes โ€” giving you the information you need to bid with confidence, set the right maximum price, or decide not to bid at all.

๐Ÿ’ก
Smart bidding: Use the inspection report to set your absolute maximum bid. If the car has $2,000 in known repairs needed, factor that into what you're willing to pay. Buyers who inspect before bidding consistently get better value than those who don't.
โš ๏ธ Auction Condition Reports Are NOT Inspections

Auction house condition reports describe visible cosmetic condition โ€” dents, scratches, tyre condition. They do not include a mechanical inspection, OBD fault code scan, or assessment of engine/transmission health. Only an independent mechanic can give you that.

๐Ÿ“Š
Know Your Maximum Bid

If the inspection finds $1,500 in repairs, your maximum bid should be market value minus $1,500. Without an inspection you're guessing โ€” and guessing at auction costs money.

๐Ÿ”
Find the Hidden Faults

Auction cars often have fault codes cleared before sale. Our OBD scan checks all stored and pending codes โ€” not just currently active ones. We find what was recently cleared.

๐Ÿšซ
Walk Away Before You Bid

If the inspection reveals serious structural damage, a failed transmission, or safety-critical issues โ€” you walk away before bidding. Not after paying. That's priceless.

๐Ÿ’ฐ
The $280 That Saves Thousands

At auction, buyers often bid $5,000โ€“$30,000+ on vehicles. A $280 inspection is the cheapest insurance you can buy before committing to a no-return purchase.

All Major Sydney Auction Platforms

Our inspectors are experienced with the inspection process at all major Australian car auction houses. Always contact the auction house to arrange physical access for your inspector.

๐Ÿ”จ Lloyds Auctions

One of Australia's largest auction houses. Regular vehicle auctions with wide selection including government, fleet, and repossession cars.

๐Ÿš— Pickles Auctions

National auction network with Sydney locations. Specialises in ex-fleet, government, and insurance vehicles. Strong online bidding platform.

โš™๏ธ Manheim Auctions

Major fleet and dealer auction house. Sources vehicles from major corporations, rental companies, and finance repossessions.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ Grays Online

Online auction platform with regular vehicle lots including cars, 4WDs, trucks, and motorcycles. Physical inspection access varies by lot.

๐Ÿข State Government Auctions

NSW government vehicle disposals. Often well-maintained fleet cars at competitive prices. Inspection access usually available before auction close.

๐Ÿ“ฑ Online-Only Auctions

Various online-only platforms. Physical inspection access is essential before bidding โ€” never bid on a car you cannot have independently inspected.

How to Arrange an Auction Car Inspection

The process is slightly different from a private sale inspection. Here's exactly what to do.

1
Find the vehicle you want to bid on

Browse the auction house's catalogue โ€” Lloyds, Pickles, Manheim, or others. Note the lot number, VIN, and physical location of the vehicle. Most auction houses display vehicles for inspection during a preview period.

2
Check the auction house's inspection access policy

Contact the auction house and confirm: (a) when is the physical inspection / preview period, (b) can you bring your own mechanic, and (c) is there a hoist available? Most major houses allow this during preview days.

3
Book your inspector for the preview period

Contact one of our trusted providers with the auction house address, the vehicle lot number, and the available inspection window. Timing is critical โ€” book early as preview windows are often short.

4
Receive your report before the auction closes

The mechanic inspects during the preview period and sends you a full report before bidding closes. Use it to set your maximum bid confidently โ€” or decide not to bid if serious issues are found.

5
Bid informed โ€” win or move on

You now have a professional assessment of the vehicle's actual condition. If you win, you know exactly what you're getting. If you lose to a higher bidder, you've been saved from potentially overpaying on a problematic car.

โš ๏ธ
Important: For online-only auctions where physical inspection is not possible โ€” do not bid. No reputable inspector can assess a vehicle from photos alone. If the auction house won't allow a physical pre-bid inspection, the risk is simply too high.

Auction Car Inspection Questions

Yes โ€” Lloyds Auctions and most other major auction houses allow buyers to bring a mechanic during designated inspection / preview periods. Contact Lloyds directly to confirm the inspection window for your specific auction event and ask about hoist access. Our mechanics are experienced with the Lloyds inspection process and can attend on your behalf.
Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Auctions can offer genuine bargains โ€” especially ex-government fleet vehicles, bank repossessions, and low-mileage estate disposals. But auctions also sell insurance write-offs, repossessed cars from owners who couldn't afford repairs, and rental fleet vehicles with very high mileage. The price alone tells you nothing about condition. An inspection tells you everything.
In most cases you have very limited recourse. Auction sales are typically "as is, where is" โ€” meaning you accept the vehicle in its current condition with no implied warranty. If the auction house made a specific false representation about the vehicle (e.g. described it as having no accident damage when it clearly has), you may have a claim. But the general rule is: what you bid on is what you get. This is exactly why pre-bid inspection is so important.
Our mobile inspectors can attend the auction yard or storage location on your behalf during the preview period โ€” you don't need to be there. For fully online auctions where physical access is not possible, we strongly advise against bidding. No responsible inspector can evaluate a vehicle from photos and a condition report alone. If physical access cannot be arranged, the risk is too high.
