Standard Mechanics Can Miss Critical EV Issues

Electric and hybrid vehicles are fundamentally different from petrol cars. The battery pack, inverter, motor, and charging system are complex, expensive, and not visible during a standard mechanical check.

A standard pre-purchase inspection may miss degraded battery health, charging system faults, thermal management issues, or software problems. These issues can cost $10,000–$30,000+ to fix if they involve the battery or drivetrain.

Our EV inspection specialists use dedicated EV diagnostic tools, battery health scanners, and manufacturer-specific software to give you a true picture of the vehicle's condition — including estimated remaining battery life and range degradation.

Important: Replacing an EV battery pack can cost $15,000–$30,000+ depending on the model. A specialist inspection that checks battery health before purchase is the most critical investment you can make when buying a used EV.
🔋
Battery Health Testing

State of Health (SoH) reading, cell balance check, thermal management system test, and estimated remaining range at current degradation level.

EV Inspection Questions Answered

EV and hybrid inspections typically start from $280 and go higher than standard petrol car inspections — often $320–$450+ depending on the model and location. This is because EV diagnostics require specialist tools and training. For high-value EVs (Tesla, BYD, Ioniq 5), the investment is even more worthwhile given the battery replacement costs involved.
Generally, 80–85% SoH is considered acceptable for a used EV, depending on age and mileage. Some manufacturers (like Nissan for the Leaf) have a battery capacity warranty that kicks in if the battery drops below 9 out of 12 bars. A battery at 70% SoH means you've lost about 30% of original range — significant for longer trips. Our inspectors will explain what the reading means for your specific model and its remaining warranty coverage.
A regular mechanic can inspect the petrol engine components of a hybrid, but they cannot properly assess the high-voltage battery pack, inverter, or EV-specific fault codes without specialist training and tools. For a Toyota Prius or similar hybrid, make sure your inspector has hybrid experience. For PHEVs and full EVs, an EV-qualified inspector is essential.
Never. Tesla vehicles can have known issues including panel gaps (Tesla's build quality varies significantly between production runs), drive unit noise (particularly in early Model 3s), suspension concerns, and most critically — battery degradation that isn't visible without specialist diagnostics. A used Tesla at $45,000 deserves at minimum a specialist inspection. Tesla's own Service Centres can also provide a vehicle inspection report for a fee, which can be done alongside an independent check.

Don't Buy an EV Without a Specialist Check

Battery replacement can cost more than the car itself. Get a proper EV inspection before you commit.
